March Spotlight: Expulsion Appeal Victory!
The Expulsion Representation Clinic celebrated an important victory this month -- winning its first ever expulsion appeal! The appeals process brought clinic members beyond the scope of the traditional expulsion hearing, requiring them to prepare briefs and oral arguments to represent their client. First year law students and AYJ members, Leslie Wulff and Micah Sucherman, were up to the task. Their zealous advocacy and hard work led to a unanimous decision: all school board members agreed to overturn the client's expulsion.
February Spotlight: Goodwin Liu on Education Policy
Just weeks after Obama's inauguration, the Berkeley community gained insight about the prospects of educational reform from a scholar who served on Obama's transition team -- Goodwin Liu, Berkeley Law Professor and education expert. The hour-long interview with Liu, part of an on-going series entitled "Learning from Leaders," was co-sponsored by AYJ and the Graduate Student Committee on Youth Policy. It attracted a diverse audience that reflected the interdisciplinary approach that education reform requires. Students and faculty from Berkeley's varied graduate programs, including law, policy, education, and social welfare, asked Liu questions about the most pressing issues affecting education today. Topics ranged from education as a civil right to teachers' unions and charter schools. Ultimately, Liu cast a hopeful but practical view of the future and scope of education reform.
